Backstage training centre

Construction has begun on site in Purfleet for our new backstage training centre.
Backstage training centre

We're building a world-first, cutting-edge training centre to allow training and skills development to take place in a unique venue that will offer real industry relevant space and equipment, that reflects current and future industry practice.

The first purpose-built centre for developing offstage and backstage skills

The Backstage Training Centre will expose learners to top level, world class technical theatre, as well as live music bands and professionals, in a unique training environment. The building will foster strong professional links through expositions and conferences which will showcase equipment, trends and techniques. It will also offer continual professional development courses, bring in leading top level practitioners, and foster relationships between entry- and mid-career- level learners.

This will be the first purpose-built centre for developing offstage and backstage skills and training in England. It will play an important role in the development of technical skills and expertise to support a sector that is growing faster than any other part of the economy.

Good road and rail access to the rest of England, London and the South East

The design incorporates a large central space (875m² with a 17m ceiling), and a number of other training areas including a CAD studio, lighting and audio-visual training studios, generic training spaces, a recording studio and band rehearsal room. These will offer access to a variety of technical performance media, and support teaching and learning.

The building will support industry expos and demonstrations, equipment testing, training and rehearsal hire space for large-scale live music and theatre performances. It will also allow members to showcase gear, set new trends, and influence training and skills development. With good road and rail access to the rest of England, London and the South East, the site offers a great base for new and existing businesses.

On track to open

We're now on track to open in mid 2012 in time for a busy summer opening season including technical launch events and an exciting programme of community and creative festival activities.

Latest update

The building is now half way through the construction phase, and will be opening mid-year. The main space is looking great, and the technical grid at 15m off the floor is certainly an imposing sight. The technical opportunities that the building will offer are becoming more apparent as the building takes shape, and what was once an ambition is now a physical thing in steel and concrete.

All the internal walls on the ground floor are complete, the  glass curtain wall installed and the revolving door frame in place. Once the building is completely water-proof the mechanical and electrical services will be installed. This is the most complex period of the build, and involves dozens of contractors from a myriad of trades, all working together to install lighting, ventilation, electrical services and more.

Our capital project manager is busy working with the interior design team, and furniture procurement will commence in the next month.
